Here's an example of a way that the computer can improve an image. In this case, Snappy took an image through the lens instead of off the moving film. You can get some good resolution that way, but it's kind of the last thing you want unless you have Priscilla Presley's skin on you face. Some filters, like Photoshop's Diffuse Glow filter, will soften a hard image and give you a more flattering portrait.
If you work for the NSC, you probably won't want to use this technique in satellite images that you'll be giving to your boss. It's important to know when to use what filters to enhance the image appropriately.
